The Laughter of Faith
By: Vashti Graham
Artist Description:
Sarah's story is one of deep longing , doubt, and ultimate joy. For decades, she carried the weight of infertility (watching time pass, promises linger, and hope fade). Yet, even in her old age, God's word stood firm: "is anything too hard for the Lord?" (Genesis 18:4). When Sarah overheard the angel Abraham that she would bear a son, she laughed not out of mockery, but disbelief mixed with aching hope. But God turned her laughter of doubt into laughter of joy when she gave birth to Isaac, whose very name means "he laughs" This story reminds us that God's timing may not match ours, but His promises never fail.
Scripture References:
Genesis 18:10-14: "Then one of them said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.".... So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?" Then the Lord said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh?.... Is anything too hard for the Lord?"
Genesis 21:1: "Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”
Hebrews 11:11: "And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise."
